Inappropriate suggestion?

It's not really hilarious but thinking back, I really don't know why I said that to my interviewer, maybe I was trying to stand out.

Back in 2006, I was interviewing for an assistant position in a wholesale business furniture company. The interview went well, and just as I was shaking hands with the interviewer after the interview was done, I mentioned something like "Hey, I noticed that you don't really have my nationality working here... Maybe you should hire me so you'll have one!" She smiled and I didn't feel there's anything wrong.

I have a friend working there and she later told me the interviewer was really taken aback, and said that I was really bold (not really in a good way) to mention racial stuff like this. I guess I still amazed her a bit because I got an offer later. I didn't take it though because I got a better offer elsewhere.
